Why do some nuts have have "nut" at the end of the name, while other nuts don't?

Well...first of all..peanuts and coconuts are not nuts. The terms for nuts are just words in the english language. Sometimes the question of "WHY?" just can't be answered. For example..why is a lap called a lamp and the color pink called pink.
