HELP!!!!...Is surname on pport necessary for going to canada?

hi..I am from india..my query is that my name is "rohit kumar verma".On my (indian)pport given name is mentioned as "rohit kumar verma" while surname is blank.Will this cause me any trouble for applying to canadian universities for MS or for getting a visa to canada or for life in canada??...PLease help me regarding this..What are the consequences..My question is pertaining to canada only
